Overall I feel that with this project I have successfully achieved my initial ideas and outcomes of documenting my family. I’m happy with the work I have produced throughout the process of doing the blog – artist research, test shooting and shooting, post production and my final outcome of images. As discussed in my proposal, I implied on my final piece to be either six or eight prints which as a result I’m very pleased with the amount of eight photographs as my final piece as I feel that it is a suitable number of images that illustrate moments with and from my family and that each photograph chosen portrays strongly the characteristics of the subjects, how this family are.
As a documentary project I decided to shoot and keep my images in colour compared to the traditional black and white photographs that is more common within this genre. I creatively chose to keep my images in colour as being influenced by the work of my artist research who all document family and friends in colour photography, I felt that colour assisted perfectly in portraying the subjects personalities and characteristics to the audience, giving the a sense of who they are, what kind of people they are through the use of colour and with the help of the décor.
My initial research has influenced the way I have shot my images through the way they have utilised photographical elements such as viewpoint, lighting, composition, colour and depth of field, in a variety of ways that create aesthetically pleasing photographs. By looking at the work of Billingham, Barney, Sultan, Toledano and Waplington has inspired my own work greatly as just mentioned with the way they apply photographic elements in their images and also stylistically they have determined the look and style approach of my overall images, the only thing stylistically different is the use of colour in my images, I have subtly and slighting toned down, simply for all eight photographs to harmoniously work together (similarly to Toledano’s work) whereas if I followed the use of bolder colours comparable to my artist research I feel that my images wouldn’t be as strong.
My final images I feel depict my idea and subjects in a complimentary and intriguing manner. I’ve captivated a diverse of moments from conversations, social interactions (or non social interactions) and individual things. I’m pleased with the chosen eight photographs for my final piece, With the presentation of my final prints, I’m happy with as the white mount board suits my images nicely, there is one print however that doesn’t match the rest because of a unfortunate mistake on my behalf, where one image is smaller than the other seven. This is because as explained previously in my project, three images have a small white boarder on the sides of the prints for them to be sized at 12×8 without being distorted and while cutting the prints, without realising in time, I had cut one side of the boarder on an image resulting in having to cut the other boarder off, therefore one print is no longer in the size of 12×8. So in the future if I have this situation I will know to be more observant and careful and to also make sure I have time to re-print the image.
Other than the mistake I made in the final presentation stage, I believe I have been successful in producing the outcome of the project on my intentions and ideas. I am pleased with the work I have achieved and with the my final piece.
