I’ve looked and analysed a variety of photographers who have produced a series based on documenting family members and friends, each have portrayed the subject in their own artistic way while still capturing the characteristics and personality of the people in their works.
I’ve looked at;
–Tina Barney – Friends and Relations (1991)
– Richard Billingham – Ray’s a Laugh (1990-1996)
– Larry Sultan – Pictures from Home (1992)
– Phillip Toledano – Days with my Father (2010)
– Nick Waplington – Living Room (1991)
Stylistic Approach:
As for the stylistic approach, the artist research that I have looked at, is also the influence of the style I want to achieve with my own work. I feel that the work of Billingham and Sultan have influenced my stylistic approach more in the sense of viewpoints, compositions, and lighting as when shooting I tend to think of how would these two photographers capture this moment. However I feel that the use of colour used in the works of Barney, Billingham and Sultan, with them being quite vast colours, this wouldn’t suit my work as well, so for the style of colour I’ve connected with the works of Toledano and Waplington as within their work, the colour is played down slightly with de-saturating the tones, but within Waplington’s work, his images have quite an orangey tint to them which I will not be following as I believe it wouldn’t suit my photographs due to the colours that are around the house/ in the rooms.
