The Thompson’s is a documentary project based on my family.
I decided to choose my family as the subject of this project as I found the work of Billingham, Barney and Sultan, who have done similar series to be intriguing and fascinating, portraying from the nitty gritty life and relationships from one series to the nice, clean, polished life and relationships from another.
I intend to portray my family in a honest light, not staging any set up but to tell the truth of what my family is like. We are an ordinary family living in a semi detached house with the four of us and a cat. What each member of the family does individually and together. Illustrating their daily routines, conversations between one another and the quiet down time moments on the evening.
For the final piece, the brief suggests the amount of images to be between 6-10 photographs, initially I am considering of selecting 6 or 8 images for my final piece as I think 10 would be too much and having on odd number of prints doesn’t feel right. 6 or 8 photographs feels to me, the right amount to portray the project idea and seems like a nice balance to show the lives of family. Also, firstly thinking of documentary photography, I think most people and myself included, instantly think of black and white images, however for this project I’ll be shooting in colour and considering having my final piece images in colour.
